ウイチョル族やネアリカについてもっと読む
ネアリカとはメキシコ北部シエラ山脈に住む先住民ウイチョル族のつくる毛糸絵画が発祥となっています。ウイチョル族は世界で唯一、侵略者に伝統文化を破壊されなかった部族だそうです。南米を植民地化したスペイン人は最初に宣教師、次に軍隊をセットで送り込み、伝統文化を破壊してきました。しかしウイチョル族だけは山奥に住み、集落をつくらず、少人数の家族で分散して暮らしていました。宣教師と軍隊を送り込んで5人家族をキリスト教に改宗させても、隣の家は山を3つ越した遠くにあります。「効率が悪すぎる！」とスペイン人はウイチョル族の侵略をあきらめたのだそうです。
「ネアリカ」は「あの世とこの世を結ぶトンネル」、ウイチョル族の宇宙観そのものも指す言葉です。精霊（神）の国と人間の国のメッセンジャーである鹿の精霊「カウユマリ」は「ネアリカ」（あの世とこの世を結ぶトンネル）を行き来してメッセージを伝えます。年に一度ウイチョル族は聖地ウィリクタへ幻覚サボテン「ヒクリ」を採集する巡礼に出ます。最初のヒクリを見つけたとき、巡礼のリーダーであるシャーマンはヒクリにムビエリ（破魔矢）を放ちます。鹿の精霊「カウユマリ」を狩るという儀式です。巡礼の間は完全断食で、ヒクリしか食べてはいけません。水分は多く含んでいても、とっても苦くてまずいそうです。1個食べるのにも苦労するのに3個以上食べないとヴィジョン（幻覚）が得られません。
シャーマンはヒクリを食べて観たヴィジョンを、蜜蝋を塗った板に極彩色の毛糸を貼って描きます。先住民は文字をもたず、「口伝」（面伝）で何万年もの記憶を伝えてきました。文字が発明されたとたん、人間の記憶力は右脳から左脳に移り、10000分の1に低下したという説もあるそうです。ウイチョル族はシャーマンの描いたネアリカによって何万年にもおよぶ神話や最新の情報、未来のビジョンまでも右脳伝達で知ります。ウイチョル族の「教会」（ほとんどが質素な小屋）にネアリカは飾られ、「宗教画」として機能しています。

"Nearika" is a term that also refers to the "tunnel that connects that world to this world" and the Huichol view of the universe itself. The deer spirit "Kauyumari", the messenger of the kingdom of spirits (God) and the kingdom of humans, travels back and forth between "Nearika" (the tunnel that connects the world to the world) to convey a message. Once a year, the Huichols go on a pilgrimage to the sanctuary Wirikuta to collect the hallucinatory cactus "Hikuri". When the first Hikuri is found, the pilgrimage leader, the Shaman, shoots a Mubieri at Hikuri. It is a ritual to hunt the deer spirit "Kauyumari". During the pilgrimage, you should fast completely and only eat hikuri. Even if it contains a lot of water, it seems to be very bitter and unpleasant. I have a hard time eating one, but if I don't eat three or more, I can't get a vision (hallucination).
The shaman draws the vision he saw after eating Hikuri by sticking colorful yarn on a beeswax-coated board. Indigenous peoples have no letters and have passed down tens of thousands of years of memory through oral traditions. There is a theory that as soon as the characters were invented, human memory moved from the right brain to the left brain and decreased to 1 / 10,000. The Huichols learn tens of thousands of years of myths, the latest information, and even visions of the future through right-brain communication through the shaman's Nearika. Nearika is adorned in the Huichol "church" (mostly a modest hut) and functions as a "religious painting".
